Pest and disease management has helped double food production in the last 40 years, but. 10-16% of the global harvest is still lost to plant diseases each year costing an estimated. Unprecedented challenges exist to produce sufficient food, feed, and fibre. In the next 40 years, it"s anticipated that agriculture must produce more food than has been produced over the past 10,000 years combined. Potatoes are vegetatively propagated small tubers or pieces of tubers are planted. Each piece with a node can grow into a new plant. Early weeks of summer in 1845, hot and dry weather overall. Weather changed, and overcast weather continued for six weeks, with temperatures 1. 5-7 degrees below the average for the previous 19 years. Records throughout europe indicate a particularly cool and rainy period. In just a few weeks, the vigorous green potato vines became a blighted mass of decaying vegetation.
