Microorganisms: organisms too small to be seen clearly by the unaided eye, microscopic, generally 1mm or less in diameter, consists of a single cell or cell cluster, or virus, ex. Red algae: multicellular & have some level of structure, ex. Mushrooms; small single cells multicellular forming cell clusters. Water, soil: understanding the nature and functioning of the microbial world, revolves around two interconnected themes: Uses microbial cells to understand fundamental processes: applying our understanding of the microbial world for the benefit of humankind and planet earth. At the forefront of medicine, agriculture, and industry of life. Common elements of both cell types: a cytoplasmic membrane that separates the inside the cell from the, cytoplasm containing an aqueous mixture of macromolecules, outside small organic molecules and ions, macromolecules carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids.
