Different views of the north; some view it as dangerous and some view it as welcoming. A southern creation, which demonstrates our anxieties and desires. We can see the north being empty and hostile(anxieties); canadian literature highlights the north as something to be survived. North has been viewed as uncivilized, untamed and where man does not exercise and control the environment. Formed in 1868, goal was to try to give canadians a distinct identity b/c only strong masculine people could survive in the north. It was argued that the english people were created by fusing a number of elements together.
