Document Summary

Donald voet, judith g. voet, biochemistry, j. wiley & sons, 3rd ed. , 2004. Blackburn and gait, nucleic acids in chemistry and biology. In 1869 johann friedrich miescher first isolated a phosphorus-containing compound from the nuclei of pus cells which he obtained in abundant supply from surgical bandages. He named the substance nuclein and carried out a precise elemental analysis giving a phosphorus content of 9. 59%. Richard altmann in 1889 obtained the first protein-free material, to which he gave the name nucleic acid . Late 19th century the pyrimidine and purine bases were isolated and characterized by albrecht kossel and co-workers and by fischer. Proof that dna was the material responsible for inheritance - not a protein, as had been the prevailing thoughts on the chemical nature of inheritance. Avery, o. t. , macleod, c. m. & mccarty, m. studies of the chemical nature of the substance inducing transformation of pneumococcal types.
