Who are we studying: 10% of the population of children and youth. Institutions: brown vs. topeka board of education (1954, us supreme court ruling. Provincial legislation: each province has its own education acts, regulations, and policies. Students with special needs should experience education in settings that allow them to achieve their individual goals in inclusive settings . Abnormal development: development that is not within normal ranges, norms are decided upon by development. What is normal development: when does fantasizing become not the norm , abnormal development is what characterizes disorder. Thinking about psychology & behaviour as a continuum. A focus on what happens when young people come in contact with others in their environment . Risk and protective factors: those factors that help (protective) or hinder (risk) healthy development, maximize protective factors, minimize risk factors. Factors affecting development: biological & environment, nature vs. nurture.
