How do we know: a framework for thinking about theories: 5 questions, classical vs. positivist approaches, consensus vs. conflict theories, conclusions. It wasn"t crime persay, it was children who were misdirected and misguided by their parents: differential rationality and responsibility than adults. State of delinquency : young people were viewed as very different from adults. In 1982: the canadian charter of rights & freedoms emerged, as a result, impacted all of the laws and people started thinking about laws on the books very differently. It"s really not effective to label kids as delinquents. Categories of theories of crime: a map: classical, positivism individual or social; Consensus-based or conflict-based: integrative biological/psychological, individual and social; - life-course theorists (lcp) longitudinal studies, over the life/course : feminist, intersectional age class, gender, race, age, disability. Ignores social disorder: functionalism ignores social inequality and negative consequences to society, does not consider psychological factors, based predominately on males.
