CHYS 3P47 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Reinforcement, Attention Seeking, Operant Conditioning
Document Summary
The process through which behavior is strengthened as a function of its consequences. Strengthened observed increase in frequency, rate (, duration, etc. over time. Behavior that affects the environment to produce consequences and is in turn influenced by those consequences: example. Sitting in the dark (light goes out), go & press the light switch, when the light goes on = consequence. May include a grouping of individual responses (class), controlled by the same consequence (child attention seeking: extinction burst withholding the reinforcer. Example when a child keeps putting his hand up & not getting picked, he gets louder. Does not include unconditioned & conditioned reflexes (blinking vs. winking) A positive reinforcer is an event that, when presented immediately following a behavior, causes the behavior to increase in frequency (or likelihood of occurrence) (martin & pear, 2015) Situation: person is sitting in chys 3p47 class & the professor asks a question. Response: student raises hand & answers the question.
