Variety of arenas: diagnosis-based approach vs. needs-based approach. Diagnosis-based approach must have a diagnosis before an individual can receive support services, treatment, and intervention. Offers more information in regards to intervention and treatment because a known diagnosis is there. Waiting time (long process) may hinder the child"s development, cause symptoms to become worse, or prevent access to services needed. Needs-based approach given treatment and services dependent on the needs of the individual. Children on the cusp of a diagnosis, can still have access to treatment and services. May not dig deeper into all factors effecting the child. The interventions put into place may not do the child justice, as some people who provide child"s needs may not be qualified or experienced in a specific condition (example: teachers or special education resource teacher) Clinical example: scotty (age 8) referred for an assessment of asperger"s disorder. Has a few friends that are his age.
