Why is it important to consider that western conceptualizations of development are only one way to understand children and youth: imposition of western knowledge. Describes different ways that parents choose to raise and discipline their children: parenting styles. Children must follow strict rules & respond to high demands/expectations. The reason behind the rules not explained & children to obey without questioning. Children tend to be obedient but lower in competence, self-esteem, happiness, and have difficulty making decisions: parenting styles. Children follow set rules & expected to obey but parents more responsive to children. Focus on children being self-regulated, cooperative, and independent. Children tend to be happy, self-regulated, cooperative, and independent. Place few demands on children, children need limits. Have low expectations of children(cid:495)s maturity and behaviour problems with authority figures and experience problems in school. Children tend to be less happy, have difficulty with self-regulation have: parenting styles.
