CHYS 1F90 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Proxemics, Social Learning Theory, Evolutionary Psychology
Document Summary
Developmental psychology has been influenced by the nature vs nurture debate. How much has to do with genetic inheritance and how much has to do with the environments and the way they were nurtured. Keep in mind the genotype is expressed through the phenotypre. It is also important to consider maturation and experience. Experience is seen as occurring in any settings/situations the child is exposed to from biological to social. Biological: nutrition, medical care, drugs, physical accidents, pollutants. Ignoring nature can prevent sociologists and social psychologists from understanding nurture. Ignoring nurture can prevent geneticists and psychologists focused on nature perspectives from understanding nature. It should not be nature vs nurture but an understanding of the interactive nature of the two. Many developmental theorists are influences by the nature vs nurture debate. Important to appreciate the range of influences that affect the developing child. Temperament refers to a person"s stable emotional reactivity and intensity.
