Chys 3p43: behavioural challenges of children and youth. Lecture 3 psychodynamic therapy with children and youth. Physical symptoms have a mental base and they are unconscious. Personality theory: conceptualization of mental processes as dynamic mental structures. In 1909, the case of little hans was a landmark in mental health work with children. Psychoanalysis served as a framework to psychodynamic therapies. Main concepts are the same/different in specifics: A. freud: psychoanalyst; founded psychoanalytic child psychology. E. erikson: developmental psychologist and psychoanalyst; created the 8 stage theory known as the psychosocial theory of development. M. klein: psychoanalyst; first person to use psychoanalysis with children; founded object relations theory. Developed as a theory of personality (structural) Develops balance between pleasure seeking and social norms. Deterministic and dynamic explanations of human nature. Deterministic: unconscious determines the conscious mind and behaviour (casual relationship) Dynamic: different structures have different energy requirements that changes.
