Week 5: Formal participation in institutions – schools

Given the institutional nature of schools, it is impossible for children to create their
school rules in a way that is more than tokenistic.
Sites of participation/non-participation
Rules: creation and application
- Protentional participation
- Ex. Dress code – some teachers will say that the student is being a distraction
to the class
Curriculum
- What are you studying in school?
- Who should be deciding what you’re studying in school?
Extra-curriculars, including student council
- Trying to give students a chance of choice

Roles of school rules
Guidance
- Need to children how to operate space
o Even if they don’t like each other
- Seemed as transparent and need to guide children
o Need to know morals and values
o Remember, school serves a very diverse community
- Guidance is not equal for everyone
Obedience
- Issue of power
o Teaching people how to become obedience and how children should
be obedience
