Greek traders in egypt bring back influences: science, religion, social ideas, and esp. art and architecture: e. g. monumental temple architecture with the use of columns. Early greek sculpture used egyptian techniques = stance and proportions. Nudity is a costume of greek athletics = competed nude at festivals to show idealized bodies. Kouroi = used as grave markers or votive gifts for gods = symbols of masculine power and identity = heroic. Dark age warfare: small skirmishes between villages, bands of men follow chieftain = small fights and raiding. By archaic period: grows much larger in scale. Increased population = competition for resources, esp. land: b/c was little arable land. Could gain more territory through border conflicts = leads to increased sophistication in armaments and battle tactics.
