10-30% of pop: marginal but essential part of population, no personal, parental, matrimonial rights. Slave: categorized as a tool rather than a person. Murder of a slave (by owner) is okay. If someone else does it, they can sue for damage of property. Legal testimony had to be taken under torture because they were seen as untrustworthy liars who would lie to protect themselves. Why use slaves: low cost (food and shelter only). 4 ways: birth, pow, debt bondage (sell selves into slavery later outlawed), or piracy. That order of frequency before debt bondage was outlawed slavery not based on race prejudice against nationalities lack of trust: racial tension: in alexandria, constant conflict between jews and greeks. How to recognize a slave: clothes (most noticeable): only roman citizens wore toga. Roman women were always completely covered: hair: men had short, badly cut hair. Supposed slave characteristics: greedy, drunken, untrustworthy, lazy, cunning. If you"re a slave you have a slavish characteristic.
