This is where hesiod begins- there was chaos, and then earth appeared. *no light at the beginning of greek creation - light come out of darkness. Hera (granddaughter of gaia) will try this later and will do it. Orderly water - encircles the land and is very fertile. A group of children who will be named the titans: gaia - ouranos. One of the first children of gaia and ouranos. She becomes a symbol of all ordering principles. Law and order = right in both senses natural and social. Continues to be around after the other titans leave when zeus takes over as ruler of the universe. Older gods of the force of light and energy.
