CLAS 1P95 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Lightning, Hekatonkheires, Cronus
Document Summary
Each generation of gods has had to overthrow its predecessors because the predecessors in each generation have misused their power and done evil against the next generation. For instance, cronus overthrew his father because his mother had told him about his father"s sinful deeds. Since ouranos was mistreating gaia and not allowing the cycle of production and growth to carry on, it was necessary for his son to overthrow him and take away his elemental power. Similarly, zeus had to punish his cruel father cronus who then misused his power and also paused the cycle of growth and production by devouring his children. In this case, zeus had to free his siblings and overthrow his father who was also proved to be an evil ruler. The pattern of overthrowing the predecessors after zeus takes power is ceased for two main reasons.
