Lord pitt-rivers; instead of digging up the interesting things he want to study everything (all artifacts) His method was forgotten about until sir mortimer wheeler, box-grid system; statigraphy- recording vertically and horizontally. Focusing on the obvious sites- your missing out on smaller sites with good artifacts. Doesn"t seem to be anything there that"s the problem. Rely on surface survey (walking the fields; looking for archaeology sites) and excavation. Many were never lost; where they already exist. Terracotta army; chinese digging a well and finding 200 soldiers protecting. People used to get into air planes to get a good view/picture; vertical picture or oblique pictures (useful for finding sites, that lies beneath the ground) High altitude remote sensing- helps find roads, cities. Human sources- talking to the people that live in the region that your investigating; ask them questions to what they know. Documentary sources- going to the library finding out all you can about the region.
