Barracks: theater is central and buildings radiate from it. Steepest seating of any greek theater c. 10,000. Use of natural terrain to create the theater they built it at the side of hills. Stoa at the bottom and temple of dionysus, dramatic backdrop: great altar of pergamon. On its own terrace huge altar: 36 x 34 m. Along the base large gigantomachy frieze = battle between the gods and giants. Monsters are titans = early chaotic gods vs. olympic gods = gods of civilization. There"s now a whole new take of what it means to be a monster in this time period. The titans are always lowered down in the frieze, never as tall as the olympian gods. Many snake-like creatures on the titans, but the gods are normal. Many of the titans are depicted with snake legs. Not shown in man"s image as the olympian gods. Here zeus is preparing to hurl a lightning bolt.
