South of rome next to mount ve savius, bay of naples. Most of what survives is from 79 ad. Mid-sized roman town estimated to have 12,000 population. Economy: based on agriculture wool grains, vegetables and wine very well known for wine. After 12 hours the city is under 3m = 1 storey high. Then series of pyroclastic surges 0 hot gases and pumice engulf city = death of 4 million in total. Pyroclastic flow is blown up rock that flies down the mountain these stones have toxic gases. The town is buries in ash and pumice no lava. The toxic gases killed the city and are easy to dig out for archeologists. Surge is much hotter and stronger = liquefied pumice, fills site c. 23 deep: fiorelli invented plastered casts. 19th century excavator used blaster to fill cavities that they found in the earth.
