The town is buries in ash and pumice no lava. The toxic gases killed the city and are easy to dig out for archeologists. Surge is much hotter and stronger = liquefied pumice, fills site c. 23 deep: fiorelli invented plastered casts. 19th century excavator used blaster to fill cavities that they found in the earth.
