Document Summary

The media"s role in society (all 3 plus it has a power to influence people) Media studies can be either neutral (utopian)(administrative) or critical ( use media for power) The critical study of the media doesn t mean condemning media. Being critical = investigating the taken for granted and imaging possibilities for change. 4 of these are the most important for us. Effects research( video games made me do it) It is not possible to measure direct effects because the media are just one component of an infinitely complex chain of causal factors. (p. 19) Another approach focuses on how the media s political, economic, and organizational structures influences media content and their meanings. Media will serve the economic and political interests of whoever owns and controls them. As media ownership gets concentrated, media gets homogenized. Globalization results in the intrusion of western culture and its values (such as consumerism) everywhere. Focus on ownership and control of media industries.
