Chapter 1,2 and 5 horkheimer and adornon the culture industry. Denis diderot (1700s) encyclopedie : reason is to the philosophie what grace is to the christian. Vico (1725): the new science: the world of nature, which since god made it, he alone knows; the world of nations or civil world, which, since men had made it, men could hope to know. What is enlightenment: a movement that championed the power of human intellect and the importance of personal liberty. A moment when scientists and philosophers began to rely on human experience and reason to understand the world. An attempt to achieve enlightenment ideals; technological progress, democratic government, public education, the end of slavery, women"s rights. He suggests that culture is a general pattern of beliefs, attitudes and practices through which members of a community interpret the nature of their existence and attempt to give that existence some sense of order (11- If conditions aren"t met, the process may be illegitimate.
