Centrality of cultural conflict in early america. Very conflicted views; not the first" colonization; peaceful or violent. Main tension: between the natives and europeans. Europeans believed themselves to be superior because they had formal education. Reflects the central cultural conflict of the time. Charles was first famous native american writer. Elaine: choice between assimilation (school) or annihilation. Early political leaders were also educational leaders! The people should be educated to lead. Canada was still part of the british empire; didn"t include these changes. Aim: establish a distinct and uniform language. Used an educational tool for children so they could know the correct words and definitions. Education for a new nation; schooling for everyone, regardless of religion, age, gender etc. Education that was local, rather than nationalized; more tuned toward regions and jobs attributed to them. Financed with local taxes; were affected by the income of the community. The great equalizer ; thought to make education equal for everyone.
