Lecture 5 hockey: nationalism and the not-so civil game, civilizing canadians: while it is central to the canadian consciousness, hockey is undergoing an identity crisis. How we are civilized through the notion of hockey through gender norms. You learn what others of group think of as men. You get exposed to collective ways of the values of that group. One of the main values can be displayed through gender. Hegemonic is when assumptions appear as natural. Associations which have been built over time have almost been normalized expectations. Terms become naturalized in a particular cultural setting. For example, the way men are viewed; the conventions and standards of what it means to be a man. The more we see them, the more we participate in them, the more we help to reinforce them. How hockey symbolizes a particular type of citizenship. What it means to be a part of the national imagination of hockey.
