Engl 1f95 literature in english: forms, themes, approaches. Some of you were a little horrified to discover that we were reading a graphic novel in a literature class, and a few of you were horrified to think that comics might actually count as. The difference between high and low art is an interesting and age-old debate. The genres used to be ranked according to the honour they brought to the gods. Thus, epics were the highest genres because they articulated the stories and beliefs that unite a nation bound together in common beliefs and common gods. Though they tend to focus on a specific hero or group of heroes and possibly even historical events, the achievement highlighted is central to the traditions and beliefs of the culture: they serve to unite nations. In contrast, the lyric is about the experience of the individual.
