Summarize everything in your own words so you understand them. Use different colours or highlight to outline important information. Rewrite your notes again after class for better retention. Get rid of all distractions so you"re focused. Research or read chapters ahead so you"re prepared. Use symbols/diagrams, to relate or connect information and ideas. Use abbreviations and short forms to remember better. Stay alert in class, make sure you have energy. Paraphrase information, you don"t need to write down everything. Handwriting your notes in pencil is beneficial for memory retention. Assign a different colour for different topics; subtopics, main ideas, date. Keeps notes for each course in a specific place. Listen for signals words, or visual ques on important information. Read end of chapter summaries for key information. You only retain 20% of the information if you do not review and/or summarize the information after the lecture. Put page numbers and dates on your notes.
