Document Summary

Created shakespeare and homer characters to fit the time. History has changed our understanding of a text. A text can talk to us throughout the ages because we are constantly reconstructing meaning according to what we know. We don"t know what people really meant so we reconstruct as best as we can according to what we know. We are taught to believe that there is a difference between facts and beliefs. All knowledge is based on values, assumptions, ideologies, power relations. Things are culturally and class determined (food, literature etc. ) but we don"t think of them that way. Shakespeare"s plays were considered sloppy back in the day. Is a set of ideologies that benefit the ruling classes (bourgeoisie) but that win a bloc of consent from the bulk of the population.
