The knight was actually a mercenary according to recent studies that looked at the places he went to. It has more psychology where other romances are more plot driven. His is the longest tales which shows that he feel entitled to take up so much time. He is a mercenary but he wants people to believe that he is a knight. As an aristocrat he wants to enforce social order. Chaucer brought greco roman literature into the middle ages. There is not a lot of women in the tales. It"s a chivalrous tale like how knights are supposed to act. Lady fortuna explained why some people excel and others fail. He wanted to eliminate the amazons because they were a tribe of independent women. Women are not present in early british literature. When they are around they cause problems (look at hamlet)
