ENGL 2P19 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Pierre Bourdieu, Arthur Fell, Geoffrey Chaucer
Document Summary
The two men in the knights tale mirror each other. They have this love triangle between them that is as much directed at each other then it is directed at the girl. Lancelot only loves guinevere after arthur fell in love with him. They each say they love the other and guinevere. There doesn"t seem to be a break between the homo-social and homoerotic for women but for men there is. Women holding hands while ice skating, would not be acceptable if two men held hands when skating. Women advertising bras stand together but with men in underwear they stand alone. Despite the resistance there is a continuum between them (men"s locker rooms, wrestling) No dirty fighting which makes the aristocracy look good even though he is a mercenary. A lot of the tales got mixed up but we know that the miller"s tale goes with the knights tale because it is a response to the knights tale.
