ENGL 2P80 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Argument From Analogy
Document Summary
Henry"s justification is undermined from within the english community. The play provides us with alternative perspectives on henry from within the community that the war is supposed to unify. Act 1 scene 1 opens the play with discussion between ely and canterbury, worrying about the legislation will take away a considerable portion of church"s revenues. Line 73-82: by giving the king money for his war against france, Canterbury has bought the king"s opposition to the damaging piece of legislation; line 84-90, canterbury provides not only money, but also a defense of henry"s claim via blood to the french throne. Act 1 scene 2, line 13-17: in semipublic space of the throne room, if his claim to the french throne is to have any credibility, he must cast canterbury in the role of disinterested spokesman for the truth. But in act 1 scene1, shakespeare has taken us behind the scenes and show us how power really operates.
