As bearers of learning and generators of wealth, jews were often welcomed into european communities. Jews were legislated against, confined to ghettos, expelled from cities and countries and hunted down and killed in instances of mass hysteria known as pogroms. Venice was a very cosmopolitan and ethnically diverse city. A hub of commercial activity and welcomed merchants from all over the world. The trade and profit of the city consist of all nations (3. 3) In the renaissance, venetian jews were confined to a ghetto or a segregated area in the city. England early medieval english monarchs had turned to the money lenders of the jewish community to finance such things as wars. Yet in 1290, edward the first deported the jews from england. Small jewish communities were scattered around england in the 15th and 16th centuries.
