Moving from comedy (problem comedy) to romantic tragic comedy. Also chronological shift 1604/1607 all is well that ends well- last comedy. Winter"s tale 1610-1611- second of five romantic tragedies, last six or seven years of his career as a playwright. Tempest/winter"s tale written roughly the same time- keep this in mind when reading the tempest. Think of time when reading both plays, important in radically different ways. Late romances occurred late in shakespeare"s career. Shakespeare shift to writing romances at the end of his career is return to literary/dramatic genre that had gone out of style- become old fashion by the end of the 17th century. Major source for this play is a pros romance called pandosto . The ending radically departs from green"s pamphlet here. It ends with the suicide of the king- instead of resurrection of king"s wife (hermione). Romantic comedy is popular late 1570-1580s, but popularity went down because theatre goers became more sophisticated.
