Between 1612 1613 he wrote henry the 8th and caradnium. The tempest may well be the last play of which shakespeare is the sole author but not the last one he wrote. Since the 19th century it has been considered his farewell to the stage. It was performed at king james"s court on nov 1st 1611, and again at court in. 1613 as part of the festivities of the marriage of his daughter elizabeth. We don"t know much about its initial performances but it had court performances. Later performance history it was revised into a sprawling melodrama and then into an opera performed well into the 19th century. Caliban earthy grotesque monster on the stage for comic effect. Characterised as a romance : theme of loss and restoration, sin, repentance and reconciliation, theme of divine providence. Like the other romances, the tempest contains elements of magic and theater.
