A lot of self-reflection: sometimes being self-critical and sometimes they are looking back. Romantics inherited the ideas of people who believed art and nature are intertwined. Some people started to move away from this and think that art is better than nature. This is the romantic conception of poetry and nature. A deep concern about the figure of the poet. Public poetry: poetry that engages with the world. For some poets their role is to stand at the side and report things as an outsider. Maybe your vision is limited when you are deep into problems. Others think that you need to be deep into problems in order to write things. The poets role is not just the reporter but the shaper, they can actually make things. Smith: making the external, internal and then giving it to us. The poet has to be willing to look in the places that other people wont look.
