Letter 21, volume 2 double for frances burney: shes writing at 5 am so its a matter of urgency to evelina. She takes the figure of the prostitutes as an ability to reverse gender roles and show a figure of autonomy: authorship is gendered masculine (dedication), but in the novel it is associated with maternity. The letter evelina"s mother writes forms kinship, and she has written her and her father reads her that way. So by the text having this illustration and quoting the first line of the dedication creates a tension and competition between masculine and feminine authorship who is the author of frances. She is holding it up and taking it away at the same time: her final letter is her shortest at the end of the novel, once she"s legitimized and finds her place in the world, her voice goes.
