Rebirth period of hollywood cinema, due to hollywood coming back from an economic crisis. 1946: height of cinema attendance at 90 million. Dies down every decade till the 1980"s where it rises. Big 5 ownes 15 % of theaters , but the right theaters of box office (70 %) Accounted for about 94 % of investment during the 1930"s and 1940"s. Big 5 (mgm, warner bros, 20th cen fox,rko) and little 3(universal, columbia and united artists) forced to sell theaters. Block booking and blind booking (requiring theaters to show studio"s entire slate of films; booking runs without seeing film first. ) Organized discrimination against smaller, independent theaters by studios. : bonnie and clyde, produced by warren beatty. Studios shift from production to finance and distribution. Opening for low-budget, independent box-office success ( e. g. easy rider) The pawnbroker (sydney lumet, 1964) box-office success without production.
