Document Summary

Tribute and labour in new spain and peru. Terms: dominican friars, bartolome de la casas, requirimiento, potosi, casa de. **there is not a large spanish population in the new world, so the spanish scheme is based on forced labour of native peoples: the encomienda system: Columbus says that native peoples would make good slaves. Columbus distributes tribute collection and labour of indians to spanish settlers. In return, spanish landlords must pay taxes (taxes increase with amount of slaves) to king, pay support for a parish priest and vow to defend colony. It is a brutal form of slavery that works with european disease to wipe out populations. They condemn brutal slavery in the caribbean. Bartolome de la casas (a dominican friar) works 50 years for better treatment of natives. Pressure from friars leads crown to issue proclamation of requirimiento which must be read aloud before natives can be enslaved. It makes natives adopt catholicism and acknowledge the crown.
