Britain: the first world war & it"s effects. How did the war alter the status of british women and the working classes: the lead-up to war. Just after the victory in the anglo-behro war, it becomes apparent that britain would have to ally with germany or france. The was some opposition when the british allied with the french. Beginning in late nineteenth century, germany embarked on naval expansion (their goal was to surpass the british fleet: britain"s naval superiority threatened, scrapped outmoded vessels and adopts latest technologies. Dominated international waters until wwii: ten 12-inch guns, steam turbines to increase speed, adapted to run on oil instead of coal, increasing its efficiency and power. The germans too adapted the dreadnought as its ship, germany would actually overtake britain in the number of dreadnoughts. Britain had long had tradition and national history/pride in relation to the navy. Needed importation of goods therefore need clear and unobstructed sea pass.
