Hist 2p55: the culture of war, lecture one. Warfare and the state: civil wars, factional strife, ethnic con icts. They don"t think of nation states as we would, more uni ed political entities dominated by legal groups and people of higher power, authority is always negotiable. Power and authority are largely de ned, based upon ideas of allegiance (no external controlling idea of the divine right of kings, no political obligation on part of various powers to retain loyalty to higher power) Latin is universal language, exists to make communication across europe easier. Make oaths to people who control property. Feudalism: land (system of rent ownership and tenancy of land ex. Knights given counties/villages and they must nd people to rent the land to), money (service and goods; money means you owe taxes (produce or cash) to the lord ex. 50% of harvest given to lord, who gives 50% of his items to barron, etc.
