Paganism and chrisianity and the dynamism of norse religion. Norse mythology was one of jrrts primary sources of inspiraion for middle earth. *leter to son about gandalf based on odin* Norse mythology is known to us through sources that display many diferent perspecives on the pagan gods and beliefs of s. In general the sources are relaively late, fragmentary and all pose problems of reliability. In general medieval chrisianity is loquacious, medieval paganism mute (bartlet 2007)- not many sources from pre-chrisian period most from chrisian period/perspecive. Doc material vs non-doc material (material culture/placenames etc. ) Virtually the only writen evidence bearing on religion on northern europe in the late iron age. Norse paganism sits within broader context of late iron age germanic paganism. *cited in almost every book on the topic as it provides a good framework for religion. Mythological illusions/ref to gods etc. language religious/mythological based.
