What do we do as individuals to try and stay healthy/maintain health. Perceived susceptibility: an individiual"s perception of being at risk of developing condition. Perceived seriousness: an individual"s belief about the potential impact that the condition will have on their health. Model assumes people"s behaviours are rational and reflective of their beliefs. Know smoking is bad, but do it anyway) Envisions the change as comprised of five sequential stages. Each stage has its own goals and strategies that can be used to facilitate desired behaviour. Useful to understand how people go about engaging in health behaviour. Does not explain why someone might do these behaviours. Puts all of the responsibility on the individual. Believing something does not necessarily mean we do it. Illess recognition: relative familiarity of symptoms, frequencies in population. Illness danger: predictability of the outcome, amount of threat and loss likely. Single mothers - less likely to receive care, but greater prevalence of distress.
