For arousal : can use self-report (7-point scale) 1 being not aroused, 7 being highly aroused, or in men penile strain gauge (plethysmograph) Blood flow into the penis: or in woman, photo plethysmograph (light into the vagina, picks up the colour change and is reflected back) In men, subjective rating and straing gauge similar. In woman, subjective ratings and photo less similar. Rate arousal and record gauge and photo p. Both male and females similar arousal levels. Females ratings not the same as the photo p. 50% of physically aroused, did not report it so, discordance . Females sexuality more flexible; not slave to genitals. Many studies show similar findings; replicated (chivers et al. , 2010) Theories can change and be modified, and can be wrong. Number of different theories: leaning theory and sex. E. g. , pavlov taught dog to salivate to bell, after bell paired with presence of food. 2) paired pictures of black boots conditioned stimuli (black boots)
