Racialized communities segregated, compartmentalized, divided from one another. Segregation psychologically mapped onto the consciousness of each designated group. Grounds for segregation determined by bodily characteristics (skin colour, etc. ) Stretches of barren land between racially speciic areas in western native townships and original maps of soweto called cordons sanitaire . Suggests a state of quarantine, fear of infection if boundaries crossed. Relected efort to secure boundaries between racially designated groups and to eradicate possibility of common ground (literally and iguratively) Limited possibility for sustained dialogue, exchange or empathy between groups. Trc seeks to enable the nation to confront the otherness of itself. Face-to-face meetings in the trc hearings potentially border-crossings in themselves: a richly symbolic gesture. However, many victims complained that perpetrators were not seeking forgiveness from those they had harmed, but from those with the power to grant amnesty. Victims" stories, therefore, remained fundamentally unheard: no border crossing accomplished.
