Linguistics is not about: speaking many languages, translating/interpreting, working on one"s language skills. Linguistics is the scientific study of language: linguists often work on aspects of a specific language, but their primary goal is to understand the nature of language in general (ie. language, ug) Three main areas of interest: language form, language meaning, language use in discourse and communicative contexts. Linguists search for general properties common to all languages or large groups of languages. Out there: words dictionary, rules grammar books. Linguists" viewpoint (scientific sense of language: language is inside human minds, a piece of mental machinery. Subfield of cognitive science (= interdisciplinary study of mind and how information, e. g. , concerning perception, language, reasoning, and emotion, is represented) Other subfields of cognitive science: auditory perception, visual perception, motor coordination. Grouped with these beacues it involves representation of knowledge and manipulation of it in a purely unconscious manner.
