Document Summary

The head (x) is the essential/obligatory element of the phrase (xp; pp, np, vp) For instance, you can"t have a pp without it"s prepositional head. In english, the preposition is always at the beginning of the pp, the verb is usually at the beginning of the vp, the noun is often at the end of the np. Other elements in a phrase modify the meaning of the head (adj, adv, d) Every phrase has an essential word in it, called its head. Constituent- the phrase named after its head. These represent our intuitions about certain words going together. The biggest constituent in syntax is the sentence. Sentential= at the level of the sentence. A constituent is a group of words that function together as a unit. Discourse and text is the level beyond the sentence. Anything not in brackets, must be there. Written in left to right order in which they must occur.
