Meaning of words, multiple meaning of words. Function words operate in a sentence to make relationships between content words clear. Pragmatics are rules about how we use language to communicate- indirect hints to the true meaning of words/sentences (example; man i"m hungry really means that i want whomever i"m speaking to to cook me food) Register is modifying language for different listeners. Discourses are interacting longer than a single utterance. Language is a complex system of symbols (words) and rules used by a group of people; interaction of form, content and use. Metalinguistics is our ability to reflect on our language and how it works. Mental operations involved in speech/language is unconcious. Discovering the process by which humans acquire and use language. Lab experiments, observations (of speech errors or conversations), cross linguistic comparisons, neurobiological measures while participants do language tasks. Language need not be taught and can"t be suppressed.
