Exchanges information and ideas : displacement allows us to communicate things distant in time and space. No resemblance between a word (the symbol) and its reference (the thing it stands for) Without this there would be no words for non concrete ideas. Has pattern based on rules about which sounds combine to form words, how words combine to form sentences etc. All messages are divisible into smaller units of analysis. Paragraphs are divisible into sentences, sentences divisible into phrases, phrases divisible into words and words divisible into sounds. Limited set of sounds can create unlimited set of words. Rules can generate limitless number of new sentences. Contrastive and distinctive because changing it will change the word (pin to tin ex) Smallest unit of speech that affects meaning. Language has phonotactic rules prohibit certain sound combinations. Two types of morphemes; free morpheme (aka a root word- example ball) or bound morpheme (aka must be attached to free one/can"t be alone)
