Traditional english grammar has been influenced by terminolohy and classification systems used in latin. This classification does not necessarily reflect the real english grammar. E. g. , many grammar texts classify grammar as parts of speech (articles, interjections, etc. ) Others classify grammar in terms of form and structure classes. English does not always rely on word endings. The form of a word in english does not necessarily show its function. Wish, google, date, and poison, are all both verbs and nouns. Words that carry the content or essential meaning of an utterance. It is called open because new words often enter the english language. Words serve primarily to show grammatical relationships. Closed word classes establish logical relationships between the different parts of sentences. Prepositions: in, on, at, of, for, from. Determiners: a, an, the, this, that, these, those, several, many. Pronouns: it, his, you, them, mine, herself. Morpheme = smallest unit of a word.
