LING 2P10 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Dependent Clause, Semicolon, Preposition And Postposition
Document Summary
A phrase does not form a clause by itself. A sentence consists of one or more clauses. A compound sentence has two clauses joined by a coordinator (and, but, or, nor, yet, for, so) For and yet are not always coordinators. Yet can be an adverb (ex i haven"t seen that movie yet) Independent clauses can also be connected by conjunctive adverbs or transition words. Contrast: however, nevertheless, still, yet, in fact. Semicolon ends first clause, then there is a comma after transition word. Ex voting ended late at night; however, the election results were released early the next morning. First clause ends in period, then comma after transition word. However, the election results were released early the next morning. First clause ends in period, then transition word is embedded in second clause with commas around it. The election results, however, were released early the next morning.
