Our speech type signals {group affiliations and social identities} American do you have /did you eat vs. british have you got /have you eaten . We are most aware of pronunciation and vocab differences in dialects of english. Within midland area = eastern states can be distinguished; within those boston is different than nyc; within nyc, brooklynese is distinctive. Southern boundary of canadian dialect for almost its entire length now. Majority of canadians are unaware of how they pronounce things and unaware of the fine detail of their pronunciation system. Both sides consider the feature as being a badge of identity of canadians which helps it from crossing the border. There are shared features but not the rising of vowels. Isogloss: geographical boundary of linguistic features (pronunciation of a vowel, meaning of a word, or use of some syntactic feature) Major dialects typically demarcated by whole bundles of isoglosses. Major isogloss in american english identified as the north midland isogloss.
