O egg-shaped: collection of nuclei, relay station for all sensory information (except smell) on way to somatosensory, (mri picture- horizontal/transverse section, the striatum cortex. Putamen: globus pallidus, subthalamic nucleus, substantia nigra, **diagrams**- two views, horizontal and coronal, responsible for primarily inhibition of involuntary movements. Basal ganglia is part of the brain"s control circulatory . Depletion of dopamine from substantia nigra causes parkinson"s. Rest tremor- does not occur when limb is in movement- at rest. Chorea- move body in very awkward ways- certain contortions- involuntary. Affects speech because oral mechanism is involved in movements. Cerebellumo located inferior to occipital and temporal lobe. Thalamus: attachments to brain stem, part of the brain"s control circuitry, responsible for coordination of: Ex playing piano: inhibition of involuntary movements. Intention tremors (trying to reach for bottle- overshoot or undershoot) Can happen in mouth- producing sounds or pitch- miss target.
